The Surprising Secret to Success Is Mindfulness. Here’s Why

Most of us go through a big portion of our lives on auto-pilot.

Running at 100 mph takes a toll on your sense of presence because you’re constantly looking for the next thing to do. You’re not taking the time to slow down and look around you, to simply observe what’s happening in that moment.

On top of that, you can use so many options to distract your attention from the present moment - social media, Netflix, your to-do list. So many things to steal your eyes.

I know, it sounds counterintuitive - when you have so much to do, you often wonder how you can afford to waste time on doing virtually nothing. You want to achieve your goals, and it feels like the only way to do this is to be constantly running and doing something.

Well, it might surprise you, but it doesn’t have to be like that. In fact, focusing on doing less will take you to more success, more accomplished goals, AND more time in your hands.

The key to that is mindfulness.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is generally defined as a non-judgmental, accepting awareness of our inner and outer experience as it arises in the present moment (Kabat-Zin, 2003).

Nobody taught us in school that we can surrender control and stop resisting the world around us. Nobody told us that acceptance can lead to so much more happiness and peace within ourselves.

Well, mindfulness practice will do just that for you. And more.

Mindfulness is the art and science of putting yourself out there without needing to have thoughts or judgments or take action in a situation. Sure, your mind never stops creating thoughts, but you have the power to observe them and gently shift your focus towards something else.

“Mindfulness is a way of befriending ourselves and our experience.” Jon Kabat-Zinn

In the real world, you can practice mindfulness simply by sitting in a chair at 2 PM in the afternoon. It doesn’t have to be complex, you don’t have to meditate for 2 hours, even 1 minute can be beneficial

And that 1 minute? Over time, it’ll be a game-changer. Here’s why.

The fabulous benefits of mindfulness

Scientists have found this inner power to shift our focus absolutely fascinating. They’ve done so many studies on the impact of mindfulness, and the results are fantastic.

It reduces stress

How do you feel when you take a moment to breathe?

How do you feel when you stop working for a minute and just look around?

Those tiny moments are the ones that keep us going. As humans, we need that kind of relaxation, we need to come back to the present moment, slow down, and check in with ourselves.

It improves your focus

This probably interests you a lot.

As a high achiever and successful woman, you love focusing on your tasks to get them done. The downside is that, over time, without pressing pause and recharging, your focus can actually decrease.

The upside is that mindfulness can help prevent that. When you practice mindfulness, you’re able to focus either on your inner world or on a single object from the outer one, but you can observe it closely - without judging it or forming an opinion.

It helps your brain work better

Our thoughts get overwhelming for our minds. They can really challenge our focus, and we need to learn how to move them on in order to help our brain function at its best.

When you give your brain a break, you free it up. You give it space to process things better. In turn this helps you understand things quicker, be more effective, and more creative.

It enhances your relationships

When’s the last time you listened for the sole purpose of focusing on what the person is saying without forming an opinion or having thoughts about it?

When’s the last time you had a laugh with someone because you finally stopped working for a bit and you were less stressed out?

Being present with the people you talk to will make the experience much more valuable and enjoyable for both of you. You’ll feel more positive and energetic because you connected with them on a deeper level, and that’s always beautiful.

All these things can seem trivial, but they’re essential to our well-being.

I’ve been where you are. I didn’t do any of this for a long time, and I paid the price for it - lost my relationship, sleepless nights, burnout, constantly feeling stressed...

"Since working with Jeni I am able to have better balance between my 'musts' and 'should' before I got caught up in everything I should be doing and didn't focus enough on the things I needed to do to move me closer to my goals. This led to extreme stress. I was shocked to learn how much control I placed on everyone else's emotions, I never understood how responsible I felt and in turn this meant I wasn't focusing on myself." Abi- Retail Manager
